Ballroom Starter Kit
Excellent!
"My wife and I are new to ballroom dancing in the last year. We've taken some lessons, but found that we needed the extra help of videos that we can use on our own schedule in our home and we've tried a bunch of them. This DVD and the whole series of new videos from Shawn Trautman have been a godsend and much more useful to us than the others we've tried. We are actually doing the dances within a short time and having fun, rather than getting aggravated with one another. Trautman's emphasis on the differing roles of leader & follower and the very clear demonstrations of those roles have helped us enormously"

Good foundation with a nice pace
"This DVD creates a nice foundation. Shawn teaches the moves clearly and slowly, giving the lead just enough information without confusing him. Although, I would have liked to see more tips for the follow. The pace was also nice, not overwhelming but not boring. The variety of dances made for an interesting and diverse dance DVD."

Trautman's emphasis on the differing roles of leader and follower and the very clear demonstrations of those roles have helped us enormously. These DVDs include much more music and time to practice the new steps than most videos, rather than just watching an instructor do a step and go to another step. We like this video a lot and strongly recommend it. On a side note, the logistics/timing of shipping and subsequent email communications with the company were, after many frustrations with other online outfits, the best we've seen."

Great for beginners.
"I have no country western dance experience at all and thought this DVD gave me and my partner a great foundation to work from."

Highly recommended
"I highly recommend this DVD for beginner dancers who want to get moving in a social dance setting. Shawn and Joanna break down the steps in a way that is easy to follow, even if you've never danced before. I've been dancing a little over a year, and I had done some of these dances before. Even for those I had done before, it was a good review. The slow dance and night club two step are especially helpful for weddings, parties or anywhere there is slow dancing and you want to do more than just sway side to side."

Well Done
"This set continues to give my husband Frank and I many fun nights at home learning and practicing together. We like that the lessons aren't overwhelming and show just a few things to get started with so we could at least go out and have some fun. Not knowing anything about ballroom lessons, this has been a good way to get our feet wet and give us lots of choices of dances to do. Thanks Shawn and Joanna!"

This is a fantastic set of DVDs
"Each DVD is set up like a live individual dance class with plenty of repitition so that you can dance right along with it without having to rewind and replay. New steps are introduced in dance frame and then the leader's part is demonstrated individually and then the follower's steps. Then the steps are shown again in dance frame and to music."

The best instructors!
I have dance DVD's of 5 different instructors. The Trautman's and the are the best. This set gives a simple overview of the
basic steps for a great variety of dances."

The Ballroom Starter Kit. Where do I start? This set was put together to get people interested in ballroom dancing by providing everything beginners need on 14 different dances through 3 DVDs. It's a collection of "sampler" DVDs, which simply means you'll get to 'sample' each dance by getting to dance it. So, let me first say that there's full instruction on each of the dances and each ballroom dance lesson starts from the beginning. This set will truly give you a nice mix of dances to go out and practice on the dance floor.
Now, a couple of things:
It's better to know each dance and not need them than it is to need the dance and not know it... |
1) This set teaches intro beginner lessons on each dance. Each intro lesson will get you comfortable with the basics and excited about your progress. Keep in mind it's 3 DVDs, not 14.
2) Learn each dance that's included. Whether you ever use that dance or not, you'll gain a tremendous amount of knowledge and skills just by exposing your mind and body to each dance. Each dance you learn will make you stronger in the particular style of dance you really like.
3) It's better to know each dance and not need them than it is to need the dance and not know it. You never know when you just might need to know how to Tango or do a Foxtrot with that long-lost relative or newfound friend at an important event.
Last, I've been dancing for some 20 years now and I'll be completely honest with you. The dances you learn on this set are all usable. These are dances that are practical and that you'll find in ballrooms, at social events, at country night clubs, and many other places. Many of the dances I learned while taking ballroom lessons are useless. I never used them outside of a performance or one of the ballroom socials where only a few 'elite' people knew the steps. If you don't believe me, talk to an ex-ballroom dance instructor and they'll tell you about some of what you'll go through and why. For me, I want to dance the dances that are popular and that are common, not some hoity toity dance that no one seems to know except the instructors and their students who've been dance lessons taking with them for what seems like 'decades'. This is simply my opinion and if yours is different, that's okay. I've lived both sides of it and I'm much happier on the side I'm on which is how our whole collection came about.
Get the Ballroom Starter Kit if you want to give yourself an advantage of knowing the different dances without worry of what you should learn first or next. Give yourself a chance to 'get to know' the dances and figure out for yourself what you really like and why. As always, if you have any questions once you go through the DVDs, feel free to give me a call at my studio (877-DANCE-01). Enjoy!
