This is an easy one to write about. I just put this collection together as it's absolutely the mix I'll be recommending when I spoke with folks over the phone. It's unique in the sense that my recommendation for getting into couples dancing is to start with line dancing. "What?" you say. Let me explain...
Let's say you and your partner have never danced before (very common) and you're ready to get started. What's the first thing you're going to do in a group class or a private lesson? You're going to dance together. Well, let me forewarn the guys here - if you've never danced before and you're about to learn your first dance pattern (the basic Swing for example) with your feet, you're about to be surprised at the other parts of your body that are now connected and need attention to. Each of the steps you learn will help you with one of your couples dances. I started out in line dancing and have a great appreciation for it as I knew many of the steps, timings, and rhythms already when I took my first ballroom lesson (not to mention it sped up the instruction which then saved me money as private lessons are at an hourly rate)
|You'll be so impressed with yourself that you'll have a hard time not telling all your friends what you've done...
The other 4 DVDs in the set provide a great foundation of social dances that every person should know. Salsa, Swing, Slow Dancing, and then the Cha-Cha really make this set worthwhile. Here's an overall breakdown of what you get and what order you should do them in.
The best order for this set of DVDs is to go through Couples Line Dancing 101 first (as I mentioned above). This will build important skills relating to timing, rhythm, and step development regardless of whether you intend to pursue line dancing as a hobby. Then, you'll go through Slow Dancing Volume 1 to get a solid introduction into the fundamentals of couples dancing as you will quickly build the lead & follow components that are essential for all couple's dancing (frame, positioning, leads, etc.). Next, is Swing Dancing 101. Here, you'll learn different timings and be ready to dance to a wide variety of music. Next, you'll have fun with the Salsa. You'll be able to quickly pick this dance up and be ready move in several directions with Salsa 101. Last, you'll get to dance the cheeky Cha-Cha-Cha with Cha-Cha 101. Each of these videos works on specific pieces that are essential to your long-term foundation.
Overall, this is a great collection that you'll be extremely pleased with. You'll be so impressed with yourself that you'll have a hard time not telling all your friends what you've done (please let them know where they can get their own or maybe you can get them one for Christmas - call me at my office at 877-326-2301 if you're looking to put 2 or more collections together and I'll make it worthwhile for you!)
Shawn put together this series of beginner dance lessons and recommends learning them in the suggested order to achieve maximum results in minimum time. This set includes 5 full-length dance instruction videos: Couples Line Dancing 101, Cha Cha 101, Slow Dancing for Beginners V1, Swing Dancing 101, and Salsa 101.
Key features of the DVDs include easy to follow step-by-step instructions, optimized viewpoints for maximum results, picture-in-picture formatting, practice time with music alongside the instructors for each dance, and an extensive library of dances that will keep you having fun for hours. Beginner Dance Lessons have never been easier!

The perfect video
"If you have ever wanted to try line dancing with a partner, this is the perfect video. We've been wanting to learn country dancing for years and finally decided we'd give it a shot so we settled on this one as it looked the easiest. We've played it a number of times and have been learning and having fun from day one. Shawn and Joanna are really good at showing you how to do the steps with examples that are easy to understand and they keep it at a very even pace. We were surprised as to how simple the dances were once we'd worked our way through them a couple of times. Their instructions work well as they show each of the dances from all sides when describing what to do, such as how much movement is needed. We just purchased 5 other videos from Shawn Trautman's 101 set and we're excited about what we're going to be learning."

now we can line dance as a couple!
"We learned individual line dancing from Party Line Dances, but now we can line dance as a couple! This line dance DVD has added a whole new dimension to our social life in the last 2 weeks. Now it is easy to lead and dance with my wife as a couple without having to think a lot about leading. As promised, this is a dance lesson a guy can really enjoy!! Thanks for a great product and experience, Steve and Patti"

Extremely easy to follow
"The Shawn Trautman Cha Cha 101 is extremely easy to follow. Shawn teaches the leader's part, and his wife Joanna teaches the followers part. In no time, you will be doing the Cha Cha and loving it! If you have questions, you can ask Shawn on Facebook! Customer Service is outstanding! I paid less for the Cha Cha 101 than I did for 15 minutes of private lessons...and I can keep practicing with the DVD! Such a great value!"

A Fun Dance to Learn thanks to Shawn and Joanna
"This is our third Shawn Trautman 101 Dvd and we loved it. Apparently, all their 101 dvd's have the same organization of: 1. Intro, 2. Rhythm & Timing, 3. Connection and Style, 4. Leading & Following, and 5. a Review. This format works extremely well for my wife and I, and it makes it quite easy to return to particular sections of the dvd for follow-up review and practice. Although it might be elementary for experienced dancers, I found the Rhythm and Timing section particularly helpful in getting me started, and I liked the way Shawn breaks down the beat and then builds it from clapping, to walking, to the basic dance step. Shawn and Joanna again do a wonderful job of explaining the basics together for both the leader and the follower, and they share many helpful tips in both the Connection/Style and Lead/Follow sections of the dvd. They cover several moves beyond the basic step and by the end of the dvd you will have a complete enough group of moves or figures to thoroughly enjoy the Cha Cha and look confident on the dance floor. The Trautmans obviously have a great love for dancing, and they are quite successful in passing that love onto their students."

The breakdown of the steps is what I like the most!
"Always wished I could dance, never took the time to learn... missed a lot! Wish I'd started earlier, appreicate the quality and breakdown of your instruction. Was enjoying a dance class at our local college, but conflicted with my work schedule, and unlike your dvds I could not always say wait I need to see that again. I do wish you were local, you have an obvious love of dance, and it would be great to take a class from the two of you. Thanks. PS - The breakdown of the steps is what I liked most. Bought both the Slow Dancing for Beginners DVD and Dance Lessons 101."

We had a great time learning to Slow Dance!
"When my wife told me that we were taking Slow Dance lessons, I was a bit apprehensive. I've never really been that comfortable on the dance floor. However, my concerns started to go away when she showed me that we would be learning and practicing in the privacy of our home with the Shawn Trautman Slow Dancing for Beginners DVD Collection. We listened to the DVD lessons a few times. It is great that when she or I had questions, we could simply stop, rewind and practice at our own pace. Shawn Trautman explains slow dance steps and moves in an easy-to-understand, confident manner.
We actually ventured out to a public event last weekend -- a somewhat formal charity event. To everyone's surprise (especially my own), both my wife and I were awesome on the dance floor! Unlike the old days, where I would slink into the corner when the music started, I confidently asked my wife to dance all night long. Both of us even found ourselves asking others to dance -- and offered them little tips along the way (forgive us Shawn for borrowing some of those!). We are both actually looking forward to going to more events where we can "show our stuff" on the dance floor. For these reasons, I whole-heartedly recommend the Shawn Trautman Slow Dancing for Beginners and rate it Five Stars!"

Easy to follow
"For people with little dance experince i found this video (along with other shawn trautman videos)to be easy to follow and understand. instruction was slow enough to not be confused yet not to the point of boredom. i think if anyone tries just one instructional video, they would agree and be hooked on learning multiple dances."

Great introduction to swing
Swing 101 with Shawn Trautman is one of several dance instruction videos that I own and is the only video series that I can recommend. The production value is higher than most and the instructors are easy to understand. This DVD gives enough instruction to get even beginners swing dancing since it starts with very basic rhythm and footsteps as well as several useful tips on technique. While this DVD is a great introduction to swing dancing, if you have any experience with dancing give the Swing Dancing Starter Pack (3-DVD Set - Beginner 1, Beginner 2, and Intermediate 1) (Shawn Trautman's Dance Collection) series a try instead. I believe the dance instruction videos produced by the Trautman's are the best available.

excellent for beginners
"Being possibly the only Cuban guy in the world who can't dance Salsa, I found this video to be excellent for beginners. The moves are taught very slowly to start off with and then repeated over and over again to give you a chance to learn them as you participate along with the video. Although I was already taking introductory Salsa lessons prior to purchasing the video, I found the video to be a great supplement because, let's face it, once you leave the dance studio and go back to your regular life you pretty much forget everything you learned."

they understand how to teach
"I really enjoyed this DVD by Shawn and Joanna. I was new to Salsa and the steps are demonstrated slowly. Then the man's steps and the woman's steps are broken down and explained. I really appreciated the fact that they tried to demonstrate the various steps slowly. One aspect that is often lost in dance DVDs is that moves are explained too quickly. Unfortunately if one cannot do something slow, one cannot do it fast. In tennis, if one cannot hit forehands slow consistently, one will not be able to hit the ball fast consistently. The Salsa DVD explains dance moves in the slower fashion. Only later are the dances done in real time to illustrate what they would look like on the dance floor. I have enjoyed a number of their DVDs because I believe they understand how to teach. Thanks."
