Steps to Line Dancing Success

1. Learn the terminology (individual steps) before trying to learn complete dances (Line Dance 101 teaches more than 30 of the most popular steps).
2. Develop "Foot-Eye" coordination and muscle memory by building small sequences of steps and doing them over and over (Line Dance 101 puts step sequences together as you learn).
3. Build entire dances based on step sequences. Though a dance may be 20 or more 'counts', it may only be 5 or 6 sequences that repeat. Once you know the step names and sequences, learning dances becomes much easier (both Line Dance 101 and Party Line Dances cover beginner dances built on sequences like this).
4. Practice without music and facing several different directions. The music won't make your feet do the steps magically. You need to be comfortable with the dance from beginning to end and you should be able to complete the step sequence independent of your visual surroundings (such as relying on seeing a particular spot on a wall during a particular step). You should also know where the dance is to end up: are you supposed to be facing the same way you started? The opposite way? One quarter turn to the right? Each dance is different, so it's important to master the steps without the music and visual cues in your surroundings. If the dance is a "4-wall" dance, meaning each time you start the dance sequence over you will be facing a new direction, you should practice to each "wall", or direction, before putting it all together with music (each DVD in the Line Dance 6-pack teaches in this manner).
5. Practice with varying speeds of music. This is a great way to practice what you've learned. Put on your favorite CD and try each dance you learn to songs that are slow or even medium speed (helps with the muscle memory), and then to the song that the dance goes to or that the DJ usually plays (note: there are MANY songs that line dances can go to; if the DJ plays one that you're not familiar with, it doesn't mean it's wrong - there are very few 'standards' that are the same everywhere).
6. Challenge yourself. Once you're comfortable with the steps, you can put them together a bit faster (Essential Line Dances 1 & 2) and then learn longer and faster dances that'll keep your mind moving (Smokin' Line Dances 1 &2). Whether just for fun and exercising, or for the club, the more dances you've mastered, the easier it is to pick up new ones during the "FREE Lessons" or during the night when others are out dancing.
