What's my candid take on Two-Step for Beginners Volume 1?
Sheeesh. I just went back through all of what's covered in this DVD and am shaking my head in amazement. It's a LOT of material! Mind you, it's spread out over an hour and a half or so, but it's still a lot of incredibly important material if you're new to two-step.
Let me give you my thoughts before I get into the DVD though. I have danced social two-step (that means in clubs, where it counts, rather than on a ballroom dance floor) for almost 20 years now. I've danced with 'first-timers' and world champions and everything in between (and I mean everything!). This is one of the best social dances out there because it's one you can get out and have fun with, even if you stink (in a dancing kind of way). The fact that it's progressive means that the dance is constantly moving counter-clockwise around the dance floor...which means, you're not in one place doing the same thing over and over. This is important when it comes to "making a follower feel good about herself." I say this for a reason - read on...
As a leader, my main goal is to please my partner. Pleasing her does not mean confusing her or making her feel like she can't do something. Pleasing her is about paying attention to her; being attentive; protecting her (very important in two-step); keeping her interested (not doing the same thing over and over and over); not making her think (giving her a mental break); and making her feel beautiful out on the dance floor. All this can be done with the basics you learn in Two-Step Volume 1 and a little creativity. more...
We start you out in this DVD assuming you know nothing about Two-Step and we assume you're new to dancing. The information is presented as if you were standing right there with us, meaning you'll have time to practice. If you're looking for a DVD that just has moves and patterns, this isn't it. If you already know how to dance the Two-Step and are comfortable, you'll find the information way too slow. If you're brand new, however, you'll find it just right for how you learn.
Once we get you set up, moving, and comfortable, we show you a number of neat pieces that you'll be able to use your very first time out on the floor. The tips and drills you'll get on this DVD are invaluable as you start your quest towards becoming proficient. Things like how to prepare for leads, how to position your bodies so you don't step on toes, how to ensure you don't run into other couples, where each partner's hands should be, etc., etc. It's good stuff if you really want to set yourself up for long-term success.
Last, if you're already a two-step dancer, but you're not confident about leading or following, I highly recommend you start here. The one, two, or three little things you learn out of this DVD can make all the difference in the world. Take the time to ensure you truly understand the dance so you can make each dance one that your partner lights up over and feels good about.
Have fun with it and as always, if you have any questions about Two-Step, feel free to call me anytime (877-326-2301). Enjoy!
Shawn has given you his take, but I (Joanna Trautman) wanted to add a note as well. You are looking at the entry lessons on one of Shawn's favorite dances. Shawn practically breathes in Two-Step quick quick slow slow rhythm. This dance is as natural to him as putting on a casual button-down shirt, pair of jeans, and cowboy boots to leave the house. You will be both a competent and a confident two-step dancer after Two-Step for Beginners Volume 1, and will be dancing at the same level of pretty much anyone but a pro on the social dance floor. That being said, don't stop here! Pick Shawn's brain! Get his moves! You'll amaze yourself with what you'll be able to do after mastering Two-Step for Beginners Volume 2 and Two-Step for Intermediate Dancers Volume 1!
